Calgary Wedding Photographers Interview with a Pro Makeup Artist

Here are 10 tips for a flawless wedding day face from professional makeup artist Marjona Sheffield from Zebo Makeup.

2017 Wedding makeup trends

I believe that eye lash extensions are probably one of the biggest trends in wedding makeup these days. Flawless contouring is also gaining a lot of interest. At the end of the day, it’s always going to be a very individual thing. Brides have their own ideas about the look they are trying to achieve.

Good Skincare Before your wedding day

Proper skin care should start 6 months before the wedding with good cleansing, moisturizing, healthy eating and drinking enough water. A week before the wedding focus trying to get enough sleep, drinking water, and staying centred. By that I mean think about calmness and looking forward to the day so you can relax and enjoy the experience.

A makeup trial is very important. Most brides will bring a photograph about what they think they’ll like but the colours and the look may not suit the individual bride. With a makeup trial, you’ll develop a relationship with the makeup artist who can work with you to create a new look that is best for you.

Lipstick is the only touch up you’ll need

I don’t recommend touch-ups except for lipstick. When I work with brides, I use layering techniques that will stay with you for the entire day and evening. In my opinion, you shouldn’t need touch-ups.

Bring your favourite lipstick or gloss

If you have a favourite lipstick or lip gloss, you should bring that. Everything we’ll use is included in the price. I do recommend that you wear a t-shirt or a shirt that is easy to remove later so that you don’t damage your make-up or your hair style. For a make-up trial, wearing a white shirt helps you to judge colours and suitability of the make-up look.

On location Makeup is ideal

I do work on location. I work within a 50 km radius for no additional mileage charges. Beyond 50 km I charge per km in addition to my rates.

Advice from your photographer: I’ve been present for many bridal preps and I can tell you for sure, it’s much less stressful to have makeup done at the same place where you will be getting dressed. Unless you plan for lots of extra time, adding another location change can mean someone is stuck in traffic, or running late. That also means someone may be missing from your bridal prep photos, or it could even cut down on the time you will have for getting dressed. On location makeup is ideal. The makeup artist will be applying your makeup in the same light where you will be photographed. You will be able to see exactly how it will look at your venue and you won’t have to worry about weather, travel or construction holding up your wedding party.

I love contouring and I love the look it provides the client. I suggest contouring because it stands out beautifully in photographs.

More isn’t always better

More is not necessarily better. It’s all about technique. The way that make-up is applied is what will give you the look you’re trying to achieve.

In order for your make-up to stand out in photographs, make-up artists will usually balance the look that will take you easily from day to evening.
